The King James Version (KJV), commonly known as the Authorized Version (AV) or King James Bible (KJB), is an English translation of the Christian Bible for the Church of England. The translation was initiated in 1604 and completed in 1611. It was printed by the King's Printer, Robert Barker. This translation was approved by the English Church authorities and became the third English translation of the Bible. The first one was the Great Bible commissioned during the reign of King Henry VIII, and the second one was the Bishops' Bible of 1568.

In January 1604, King James I held the Hampton Court Conference, where a new English version of the Bible was conceived in response to perceived issues with earlier translations, as identified by the Puritans, a faction within the Church of England. King James gave specific instructions to the translators to ensure that the new version adhered to the structure and beliefs of the ecclesiastical system of the Church of England, including its ordination of clergy.

The translation was carried out by 47 scholars, all of whom were members of the Church of England. As was typical for translations of that time, the New Testament was translated from Greek, the Old Testament from Hebrew text, and the Apocrypha from Greek and Latin. The Authorized Version gradually gained prominence in Anglican and Protestant churches in the 18th century, eventually replacing the Latin Vulgate as the standard version of scripture for English-speaking scholars.

In 1662, the text of the Authorized Version was authorized by an Act of Parliament to replace the text of the Great Bible in Epistle and Gospel readings in the Book of Common Prayer. The standard edition widely used today, especially in the United States, closely follows the text edited by Benjamin Blayney at Oxford in 1769.
